My Poor Sick Baby

Paul. Pre-sickness

Yesterday I walked downstairs to the wonderful fragrance and sight of Diddy's throw up. Like any responsible partner, I yelled upstairs for Ryan to wake up and clean up this mess. I am an amazing wife. From there, the day went downhill real quick.

I fed Paul his morning bottle and then an appetizing breakfast of bananas and oatmeal. Paul was playing with his toy box when he crawled over to where I was sitting on the couch, pulled himself up, and unloaded his bottle and breakfast ALL OVER ME. Excellent.

We changed clothes, he was still acting okay, and I gave him another bottle before nap time. 40 minutes into his nap he woke up screaming. I went in to see he had thrown up all over his crib. Super.

The next few hours were full of throwing up, crying, and dry heaving. When I called the doctor they suggested to give him a teaspoon of Pedialyte every five minutes for FOUR hours. But after 45 minutes of Paul throwing up Pedialyte we decided to take him to the doctor. I don't know why kids have an absolute knack for getting sick on Sundays, but they do. We headed to urgent care where they decided he needed an IV of fluid since he had not had a wet diaper all day.

Let me tell you that watching your 9 month old sweet baby get an IV is heartbreaking. The first nurse could not get the IV in, so she called in the big guns. A woman named LuLu who had a hunchback and may have been 100 years old. She came in, assessed the situation, and had that IV in Paul's arm in no time. I almost kissed LuLu.

We were in this little examination room for almost 4 hours, making sure Paul got all his liquids and some anti-nausea medicine. He was a trooper, but irritated to have his arm all taped up to an IV. But the worst was yet to come. The doctor told us he could only have Pedialyte until the morning. At this point Paul was STARVING. The night wasn't too bad, he only woke up twice for some thirst quenching Pedialyte. In between his 5 minutes supplements I had to give him an empty bottle to suck on so he wouldn't freak out. Poor guy.

He is feeling a little better today but certainly not himself. It is true that I wish I could throw up a hundred times myself so he wouldn't have to be sick. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day!

  1. Ah, poor sweetie. And poor Mama having to clean up all of the mess! I remember our first ER visit with your cousin Jeff--he was about 15 months old--when they came to draw his blood I couldn't watch and made your Uncle Rob stay with him, and Uncle Rob hates the sight of needles!
