Airplane Etiquette

Ryan and I got home from a wedding in Mexico. It was really pretty, warm weather, and the couple looked relaxed and happy.

As we were in the air for 4 hours, I thought about a controversial airplane etiquette situation: reclining of the seat. I have NEVER in my 29 years of life reclined my seat on an airplane. I don't know why this is. Perhaps my mother never let us touch that little button when we were younger?

Because of my own aversion to airplane reclining, it physically angers me when the person in front of me reclines their seat. Now some may say that a simple solution would be to recline my seat, the person behind me could recline theirs, etc. etc. However, what about that poor person in the very last seat who does not have the option to recline? I just can't bring myself to do it. I don't want to sound like Mother Teresa, but I can't justify placing my own comfort on the effing airplane before a stranger's.

Am I missing out? Is it really that more comfortable? I would like to hear your thoughts.

  1. I don't recline either. There is not enough leg room to start off with and then if the seat is reclined you're left with even less space between you and the seat in front of me. John hates it when people in front of him recline too. I wouldn't say that I hate it because really, that's what it's there for, but I still don't do it out of common courtesy for the person behind me.

  2. i really don't recline either. my favorite airplane flights are the ones where i have no seatmates and get to sleep across three seats. i also loved the time i got bumped up to first class. every thing that has followed has been a tremendous let down.

coming back form turks the stewardess came up to me and told me i had to return my seat to the upright position and i had no idea that my seat had been reclined that whole time. so, obviously not that much of a difference.

  3. On my flight from Washington DC to Frankfurt I had the back row of the plane. Aside from being the front row- it was actually pretty nice. No one kicks the back of your chair and the airplane sound drowns out a lot of the noise. The plane we were on we put things behind our seat and had front storage, plus we got to board first so we had 1st shot at the overhead storage.... maybe this makes up for the lack of recline?

The funny thing was once we were in Europe they don't call seating in any order. Every does their best to box out and get on the plane. It's funny to me because everyone is in a big hurry to get on the plane to sit and wait... we all take off at the same time!
