Crafty?

I have mentioned before how I need a new coffee table. However, I actually like the table we have now. I like the size and all of the storage it provides. I do not like the scratches that have decorated the top:
Hello eye sore.

Is there something I can do about this? Can I paint the table? Can I add something to the top to camouflage the damage? Crafty people out there please help me!!!!!

  1. you can sand it and paint it. you can stay dark to look like a classic coffee table to pick of cool bright color to match your room and make a statement!

don't try to "strip" the finish and restain it. that is a horrible process and it smells and takes forever and doesn't work and you'll eventually give up and just paint over in the end (like we did with some shelves).

  4. LOVE this coffee table. . . in fact we were actually looking for a used (i.e cheap) one we could redo.

My idea? Sand it down. Then take old antique-y world maps and layer them across the top ina funky style. Use Mod Podge to glue them down. In other words, decoupage. But with old world maps.
