Charlie 4 Months!

Before I give you an update on Charlie, I have a blog comment question.  I had my comments on free for all, but all of a sudden I had a TON of span comments, informing me how to have sex and make my penis larger.  Super.  So I turned on comment moderation, that I had to approve the comments before they were published.  But how do I respond back to people?  Before the comments would come to my email, and then I could email back and say "thank you" or answer a question or give a hilarious reply (obviously).  I know I can turn on that thing where you type in a word and numbers before you make a comment.  But I HATE that feature when I try to comment on other blogs because it takes forever, and I never get it right and I have to do it over and over.  Bums me out! :) Does anyone know what to do?

On to a different note, my little tiny baby is not so little anymore.  He is 4 months old and as much as I love this age because he is much more interactive and can do some cool things, he is growing up way too fast and I demand he stop.

He is still the sweetest baby in the world.  He loves to snuggle and take naps while I hold him.  This usually works out okay, because I am much more likely to indulge this request than I was with Paul.  I am aware now that one day he will be too busy to want to cuddle with me, so I let him lay across my body and sleep even though the only thing I can do while he is in that position is lay on the couch.  The sacrifices I make.

His crazy hair is falling out a bit and he now sports a bald spot in the back.  It is not pretty.  But I can usually comb some other wisps over and try to cover it up.  Why is baby hair so weird and why does it fall out?  These are some big mysteries.  His eyes are staying blue and some people say that his hair has a tinge of red.  I guess we will see.

He can roll over from tummy to back and is pretty close to back to tummy.  He can do it if I can get him on his side.  However, he likes to be in the action and watch everything, so he never wants to turn away.  I can't really blame him since we are a very entertaining family.

He is now mostly on formula.  I nurse him once in the morning but for the rest of the day is on formula.  I have mixed feeling about this, but mostly I feel at peace.  He is doing fine with it all of course.  I think I am mostly sad because I am not going to do this again.  And it feels like a huge chapter is closing in our lives.  I know there are plenty of other things in our future to look forward to, but I still feel a little nostalgic for those early days when all he wanted to do was breastfeed.  Even if I was exhausted and not getting any sleep.  The grass is always greener I guess.

He is still swaddled (when do I stop this?) and his sleep is okay.  He got sick with his first ear infection (so sad) and it really messed up our sleep schedule because I let him sleep in the big bed and snuggle up with me so I could watch him breathe (sad but true).  But last night he woke up once and only needed a pacifier.  I didn't even have to lift him out of his crib, so I think we are back on the right track.  It is amazing how much nicer I am when I get to sleep a bit.

The kid LOVES to stand.  The exersaucer is a big hit because it lets him check out the world and I can still cook dinner.  A win win.

He also found his toes, which I think is one of the cutest stages ever.  He looks just like a yogi baby.  He can sit up for a second with his hands on the ground and me behind him making sure he doesn't topple over.

I feel like Charlie's favorite thing to do is smile.  His big gummy mouth melts my heart.

We all love Charlie so much and although two boys is going to keep us so busy, we are so grateful for this family!

3 Months Old.

They say the days are long but years are short.  I am on the couch, with one boy being silent watching Little Einsteins, the other in his new outfit from Old Navy, sleeping sounding on his boppy.  My coffee is hot and my heart is in disbelief that my brand new baby is already three month old.  Three months to me marks the transition when they move from newborn who lays around all the time, to a baby that wants to do stuff.  He still loves to cuddle with me, but I can already tell my days are numbered.

We are spoiled with Charlie's disposition.  He is so sweet and hardly ever fusses and he is such a nice eater and sleeper.  I think he will be allowed to stay.

He has really found his hands, and every picture we take is blurry because he keeps waving his limbs around.  He also love to put his fists in his mouth.  If you are wondering if a baby can actually fit his entire hand in his mouth, rest assured that the answer is yes.  A side note here.  All these pictures on today's post are from my iPhone.  It is embarrassing and yet the truth that I have not taken ONE picture of Charlie on my good camera.  Not one.  This is 2nd child syndrome I suppose and I am sure I will be paying Charlie's therapist bill because of it.

He still has a ton of hair and eyes are still blue.  I can't remember when Pauls' changed.

His thighs are really chunky.  The wrist rolls are still there.

He loves to laugh and talk and has started to blow bubbles and make raspberry sounds.  He watches his big brother around the room.  Paul has been requesting to hold Charlie more and more but he usually starts this request by trying to pick Charlie up from the floor by himself.  It is as frightening as it sounds.

Anything sweeter that a baby sleeping on your chest?

He doesn't love tummy time, but will tolerate it.  When he is on his tummy he tries to scoot forward rather than try to roll over.  He gets some momentum with these movements, so I think he will roll over on accident more than anything.

He loves to be swaddled at night, and I can't believe it can be comfortable since he is essentially sleeping in a TIGHT straight jacket, but I don't care since he is sleeping through the night.

Napping on Mommy's bed

I am back at work and although the pumping continues to be depressing in the book room, we are doing pretty well overall.  Charlie seems to like all the places he has to go while I teach, although my favorite days are when I am home and we can bum around in the morning instead of sprinting to get out the door.

Charlie is a perfect addition to our family.  We couldn't feel more lucky that we get to wake up to his huge smiles in the morning.  Whenever he whines, Paul RUNS over to him muttering, "I'm coming Charlie, I'm coming."  Paul gives Charlie such good cuddles that it makes me nervous that he is going to suffocate him, but I know that those snuggles will soon turn to wrestling moves that I'll never understand, so I am appreciating this moment.

We love you so much Charlie.  Thank you for being part of us.

PS- who is ready for the Bachelor finale??????

Seventh Generation Baby Wipe Giveaway!

My sweet Paul will be three in just over a month.  I cannot believe that I will have a three year old.  Everyone is telling me that three is hard.  Like really hard.  Is this true?

Before you ask, no he is not potty trained.  Should he be?  Probably.  I told myself I wasn't going to worry about it until after Charlie was born.  Now Charlie is almost three months old, and I still don't want to worry about it.

Anyway, wipes are a very popular product in my house as we have two in diapers.  And I have two boys.  In addition to dirt diapers, they have a lot of boogers.  I hate the word boogers.  I hate that I am writing about them right now.  But you know who likes boogers?  Boys.  Especially two year old boys.  They come up at the dinner table almost every night.  But I digress.

We use a plethora of wipes everyday for booties, noses, hands, faces, and lord knows what else.  Recently I tried out a new brand of wipes from Seventh Generation.  I was intrigued because these wipes are free from fragrances, dyes, parabens, pthlates, and alcohol.  When I look at my babes, especially brand new Charlie, I can't imagine putting all that "stuff" on his innocent body.  Seventh Generation allows me to clean up the dirty work without the worry.

The plastic package comes with a close able lid which is great because you can easily throw them in your purse or diaper bag or car.  The wipes are thin with the perfect amount of moisture.  Have you ever tried to wipe crusted macaroni and cheese off a toddler's face with a dry wipe?  Will not happen and will most likely end in tears.  From both of you.

The suggested retail price for  64 ct. of these wipes is $2.99 and they are available at Target, Whole Foods, Diapers.com, and Amazon.

The good news:

I die over the brotherly love.  Charlie's face lights up whenever he sees Paul.  These boys are so precious!

Meeting the Baby!

I am too tired to write much today, but I love these pictures from the hospital room.  Paul was a little unsure about the new baby, but has turned a corner.  Now when Charlie makes the littlest sound, Paul yells at me to "get my boob out" because "the baby is hungry again."  Can't wait until he says that in the grocery store.  I love these boys!

Charlie's Birth Story

Charlie was due on a Monday.  For some reason, we all thought he was going to come early.  As the last weekend approached, I was beginning to get a little antsy!  That Friday I went to the doctor and she told me I was 3 centimeters, and 65% effaced.  I was making progress but I told her I did not want to talk induction quite yet.  I am sure if I were a few days late, I would be changing my attitude on that induction situation, but I wanted baby Charlie to come when he was ready.

Saturday I began to have a few contractions, but nothing too painful and nothing regular.  Then they went away.  Saturday night I woke up with a few contractions, but again they were irregular and I could talk through them.  Ryan and I went downstairs to see if things would pick up, but after a couple of hours I told Ryan we should just go back to bed and if I fell asleep we knew that things were not progressing.  I fell asleep.

Sunday, NOTHING happened.  Maybe one or two contractions but mostly NOTHING.  I was feeling very defeated and bummed that this baby was not going to come on time.  So I called Nurse Maureen.  She told me to tweak my nipples, take a walk, and eat something spicy.  I got right on those nips, went to Target to walk around since it was freezing outside, and sent Ryan for some vegetarian sushi with extra wasabi.  By the end of the night we still had no signs that birth was impending.  So Ryan called his "just in case" substitute and told her he would be at work on Monday.  We called daycare and told her that Paul would be there.  I made a little list of things to do in order to keep myself busy.

Ryan and I went to bed disappointed.  And then the clock struck 3 AM.   I woke up with a pain that felt very familiar.  I immediately got myself on all fours and rested my forehead on my pillow.  In 1/2 hour I only had 3-4 contractions, but they were pretty serious in terms of pain, so I woke up Ryan.  Ryan looked at me (on all fours) and called my mom within 10 minutes.  Let me interject here and say both Ryan and I thought we were being very conservative on giving ourselves plenty of time to get to the hospital.  Paul came quickly, and my one hope for this delivery was NOT to have the baby at home or in the car.  My mom drove over while we finished up packing.  I had a quick contraction in the kitchen with my mom watching, and my mother later reported that based on what she saw she thought we had plenty of time to get to the hospital and receive pain medication.

We left the house at 4:15.  I requested that the radio be turned off and we drove the 10 minutes to the hospital in silence.  It was very uncomfortable.  Very.  There had been part of me that thought I would have baby #2 without drugs, just as I did with Paul.  I thought that when it was actually game time, I would tell myself that I had already done it once and I could do it just one more time.  But during that drive to the hospital I changed my story.  I was welcoming of the idea of a needle in my back and my legs becoming numb.  I started to guess how far along I was.  I was hoping for a 5.

We pulled into the very empty emergency room.  They called up to labor and delivery and I was told to just have a seat while they came to get us.  This was the longest part of the entire evening.  I am sure it was only about 10 minutes that we were waiting, but it felt like FOREVER.  Sitting down felt awful, so I stood up and draped myself over the chair and tried to get a grip.  I am sure I was a sight to see.  Finally, the nurse came through the double doors with a wheel chair and we were on our way.  I could not sit in the chair without excruciating pain, so I walked.  The nurse called ahead to the delivery room to get everyone ready.  As we approached labor and delivery, the doctor followed all of us right into the room.  I stripped off my clothes, but myself in an hospital gown and tried to lay down.  But again, sitting back felt terrible, so I sort of sat sideways on the bed with my legs dangling off the side.  The nurse told me that the anesthesiologist was just in the other room and the doctor asked to check how far along I was.  As the doctor did her exam, I watched her face to try and get any clues about the dilation situation.  After a minute she reported that she did not feel any cervix.  I had to have her repeat the news.  She said I could push whenever I felt the urge.  I was sad for a second, knowing that I couldn't get an epidural, but then I was distracted as my water broke.

Since the doctor had to break my water when I had Paul, I always wondered if the water breaking was similar to what you see in the movies.  My curiosity stemmed from wondering, if I was standing in front of my class of 16 year old students, would they know that my water had broken?  The answer?  It is way less dramatic than it is in the movies, but there is a bit of a popping sound.  If you were wearing jeans, I think you could get away with it, but if it was summer and you were sporting a skirt or a dress, it would be a little harder to hide.

After two sets of pushing, the doctor told me that she could see a lot of brown hair.  I was pretty surprised to hear this since Paul was a baldy.  After the second round of pushing, I had to lay on my left side and get a bit of oxygen.  They told me that the baby was a bit in distress, and I needed to push the baby out.  And so I did.  Ryan said I went in pure primal mode.  I remember that it hurt a lot and I almost felt like I couldn't do it.  In fact, I think I would have let anyone cut me open from head to toe, if that would have made the pain stop.  But just as those thoughts entered my mind, I heard "look down, look down" and there he was.  My 7 pound, 13 ounce baby boy.  They brought him right up to my chest and I was instantly in love.

Charlie's oxygen was a little low, so they took him to the nursery to help him a bit.  This was the only negative to my entire birthing experience. All of a sudden, Ryan was gone, Charlie was gone, and there were no nurses to be found.  I was alone for almost 30 minutes, not sure if the baby was okay.  My purse was across the room, and I couldn't get my phone to call my mom.  Finally Ryan came back to tell me that everything was okay, that Charlie received a bath and was breathing just fine.  He gave me my phone and headed back to be with the baby.  I called my mom, who thought I was checking in after getting an epidural.  She was surprised to hear that baby had already been born.  So was I.  The contractions had started at 3 AM and Charlie was born at 5:02.

I was wondering how I would feel after having my second son.  How he would fit into our family?  What would Paul do?  How would we make this all work?  But those worries were for nothing.  Charlie just fits.  It is like he has always been here, right where he should be.  You don't have to find the extra love or patience.  It just grows.  My heart is so full and I am feeling beyond blessed to have two healthy boys that are surrounded by so much love.  I cannot express the gratitude I have for my little family of four!  Welcome to the world Charlie Ryan!

Baby Bump- 39 Weeks!

How far along: 39 weeks!  He continues to build a layer of fat to help control his body temperature after birth!

How big is baby: A mini watermelon- about 20 inches and a little over 7 pounds!

Sleep:  Hit or miss.  Last night was pretty good but overall it is getting harder and harder.  I miss sleeping on my stomach, which is still worlds away because those breast feeding hoots don't help with that either!
Diet/Cravings/Aversions: Don't feel like cooking and don't feel like figuring out what I want to eat.  I am on a balanced diet of cereal, apples. and peanut butter pretzels.  And junior mints.
Exercise:  I think my yoga practice officially took its break this week.  It is just getting too uncomfortable.  But I am proud to say I did yoga until 38 1/2 weeks pregnant.  I am teaching my last yoga class tonight before I am on maternity leave!

Gender: BOY!!
Movement:  Yes!

Worries: We still don't have a name.  We change our minds on the hour.  Paul told my M.I.L that we were going to name the baby Howie.  We are not.  However, the Elf on the Shelf is now conveniently named Howie.

What I'm loving: The Christmas decorations are up, the tree is decorated, and the lights are on outside.  Sometimes my husband can be a bit of scrooge during the holidays.  This is disappointing.  I like Christmas- a lot.  I like the excess of it.  I think it is a little fun to go over the top.  Maybe that explains why I can't stop buying my two year old Christmas presents.

Symptoms: We have reached the point of the pregnancy where I can't call anyone without them thinking I've had the baby.  I have not.  I would like to make a public service announcement and say I PROMISE to let you know when this baby boy arrives.  Believe me, no one will be more excited than Ryan and I.  (Of course it is nice that people are checking in on us and making sure I am feeling okay)

What I'm looking forward to: Holding that snuggling little baby.  Smelling that newborn smell.

Best moment of the week: We went to go visit my friend that just had baby #2 and has a son that is around Paul's age.  She looked calm and happy and reported that the addition was not as stressful as she thought it would be.  Just what I wanted/needed to hear.  Paul patted the new baby's head and told the mom he had to be gentle with the baby.  So sweet!

Paul also found a very convenient place to put his milk when we are laying on the couch.

Some Reads for the Weekend....

Here are some blog posts that are certainly worth your time:

Me Then?  Meet Me Now: 1st Kid/2nd Kid- my mom sent me this and all I can say is AMEN!!

What a  Difference A Year Makes- this is great for those having a baby, just had a baby, or women in general!

16 Ways I Blew My Marriage- I've seen this around for a few weeks, and I think it has some nice reminders for everyone!

We have spent our Friday night getting the infant car seat ready, washing the last load of laundry, and I have tried to convince Ryan all our Christmas decorations need to go up before the baby comes.  Pretty exciting... but hopefully in TEN DAYS I will be sipping on a cold beer on a Friday night while snuggling a sweet newborn baby!!

And of course, a photo to make this post complete!

Happy Weekend!

Baby Bump- 38 Weeks!

Does a bigger belly make your thighs look smaller?

How far along: 38 weeks! He has a firm grasp and his organs have matured and are ready for life outside the womb.

How big is baby:  Almost 6.8 pounds and over 191/2 inches long (like a leek).

Sleep: Ryan just called me from work this morning to ask if I was okay since I moved around so much last night.  It is just getting harder to get comfortable!  But I know in just a couple of weeks I will gain the ability to fall asleep standing up, so take a little and give a little.
Diet/Cravings/Aversions: I am over food.  Nothing sounds that good and I am excited to sit and really enjoy a meal (maybe sushi) with a huge glass of red wine!

Exercise: YOGA! When I walked I walked into class this weekend, the teacher told me that someone who just checked in told her I had my baby.  Clearly this isn't true.  Apparently the girl got me confused with someone else.  But I am glad that everyone in my world is on high alert.

Gender: BOY!!

Movement:  Yes!

Worries: What are we naming this child??  Ryan and I were up late last night, laying in bed trying to decide the name.  We are no closer to this big decision.  Everyone should comment and leave their favorite boy name so we can steal it.

What I'm loving: The bottles are washed.  The kitchen is scrubbed.  The breast pump is out.  The nursery is mostly done.  This weekend we are putting up all our Christmas stuff, my favorite time of year!

Symptoms: The exhaustion is back in full force.... I have to take a nap on the couch at 6:30 every night.  Luckily Paul likes to "snuggle" with me and watch Mickey Mouse.

What I'm looking forward to: The doctor at the end of this week and ONLY 13 DAYS.  My friend just had her baby last week, so Paul and I are going to visit in a few days.  Hopefully holding a newborn will give my baby some sort of signal to get on out!

Best moment of the week: I caught myself a little cold this weekend and currently I am on the couch watching Gossip Girl, sipping coffee (decaf- calm down), reading magazines, and resting.  My mom took Paul to the library and is now bringing me lunch.  I find it very necessary that your mom retire if you have a toddler, are pregnant, and sick.  She is a lifesaver!

Baby Bump- 37 Weeks!

How far along: 37 weeks!  Baby boy is now considered FULL TERM!!! His lungs are likely to be mature enough to fully adjust to life outside the womb.

How big is baby:  Almost 6 1/3 pounds- head to heel like a stalk of Swiss chard!

Sleep: This is not going so well.  It's not that I'm just uncomfortable, I feel like I can't stay asleep.  But I know it's just par for the course.
Diet/Cravings/Aversions: Lots of milk and cereal.  Still off the guacamole.  And of course my taste buds are getting VERY excited for a glass of wine/beer/champagne.  Or all of the above.

Exercise: YOGA! Yesterday in barre class, we all tucked our hips in honor of trying to get the baby out.  He is still in.

Gender: BOY!!

Movement:  Yes!  I can feel body parts, but I can't always figure out what baby parts they are!

Worries:  I don't know if I am worried, perhaps apprehensive is a better word, about getting to know our new son.  I am not worried that I won't have enough love for him and all that business, but we know Paul pretty well.  I know that Paul hates when everyone looks at him at the same time.  I know that he hate group singing (happy birthday is his nemesis) and he is really crabby if you have to wake him up from a nap.  I know when he is tired, hungry, or needs to snuggle on the couch with his mom.  I know he hates getting his diaper changed and would like to stay in his pajamas most of the day.  Basically, I know what to expect with Paul, even when he is being naughty.  It seems a little daunting to get to know another person and all their little quirks.  Of course part of it is exciting, but the thought also makes me want to crawl back in bed and take a nap.

What I'm loving: Off school for a week to celebrate Thanksgiving!  We went on a library and lunch date yesterday with our friends Sarah and Delilah and we have another play date today.

Symptoms: I feel pregnant and tired.  Blah Blah Blah.

What I'm looking forward to: Thanksgiving, my 32nd birthday (how did that happen?) and we only have 19 days until the due date.  19 19 19 19!!!!!

Best moment of the week: Went to the doctor last week and baby is head down!  And my doctor told me that if anyone has any stupid comments about my size, shape, etc. then I need to tell them to "SHUT UP."  Couldn't agree more.

Baby Bump- 36 Weeks!

How far along: 36 weeks!  He is still packing on the pounds and shedding most of the downy covering of hair that covered his body.  Most likely he is in a head-down position!

How big is baby:  Almost 6 pounds- crenshaw melon (what is that??)

Sleep: It's okay. More getting up to go to the bathroom but nothing awful.  I think these last few weeks of pregnancy do try to prepare you for living with interrupted sleep.  But nothing can prepare you for that.
Diet/Cravings/Aversions: Nothing new!

Exercise: YOGA!

Gender: BOY!!

Movement:  Yes!

Worries: I am more worried about this baby exiting my body.  I am worried about the pains of labor.  One day I am worried that this baby is going to come so fast I won't have time to blink, and the next day I am worried I am going to have a labor that lasts for days.  But then I have to remind myself that babies enter this world everyday.  Plenty of women do this.  I've done this before.  And one way or another, this baby is coming out!  And there is beer at the end of this marathon.  That is always motivating.

What I'm loving: It snowed this weekend, and we spent plenty of time in our pajamas, watching movies, and drinking hot chocolate!
Symptoms: I feel just a bit more weighed down, a bit more pregnant.  The need for naps is back (not that I mind) and my nesting urge has not reached its full potential which disappoints me!  This house needs to be cleaned.

What I'm looking forward to: 28 days.  Just 28 little more days!

Best moment of the week: 98% of my Christmas shopping is done and wrapped.  Seriously.  I am so impressed with myself.

DON'T FORGET TO ENTER THE GIVEAWAY!  ENDS AT MIDNIGHT TONIGHT!!

Seventh Generation Baby Plus Giveaway!

With a toddler in the house and a new baby on the way, I am constantly thinking about what I am putting on their skin and how I can keep them as healthy as possible!  Seventh Generation now has a new line of baby skin products that I had the pleasure of trying out!  The Baby Sunscreen, Baby Shampoo and Wash, Foaming Baby Shampoo and Wash, Bubble Bath, Baby Lotion, and Diaper Cream are all products I feel comfortable using on my babies.  Check out these facts:
  • First complete line of biobased baby care products
  • Endorsed by Healthy Child, Health World
  • Products are gluten-free
  • No synthetic fragrances, phthalates, or parabens
  • Tear free
  • Non-toxic, biodegradable
  • Made with natural ingredients that come from plants and minerals
  • Extra-virgin olive oil to moisturize and protect
I love the Foaming Baby Shampoo and Wash!  It is light, smells great, and logistically genius that the shampoo and wash are all in the same bottle.  Paul is also a huge fan of the Bubble Bath.  Using just a little of the product provided long lasting bubbles for our entire bath experience.  If you can relate to how important this is to a two-year old, this product is for you.

As you can see, someone gave it their full approval!

I am also really excited to try out the baby lotion with Baby Boy #2! I want to give baby massage a try with this little man, since I have learned there are numerous benefits like better sleep for the baby (hello, who doesn't want this), stronger bonds, facilitates body awareness, boosts the immune system, stimulates neurological and brain development, and can help with tummy troubles.  Do we need any more reasons?  Plus, watch this short video and just observe how much these sweet little babies love the power of touch!

Win It!

Want a chance to win these fabulous Seventh Generation Products?

I am giving away TWO Seventh Generation Wee Gift Baskets that include everything you see above!  All you have to do is be a follower of My First Baby Bump AND leave a comment telling me which product you are most excited to try!  Good luck!

Disclosure:
I received a Seventh Generation gift basket and a stipend as part of the Motherhood, but all opinions are my own!

Baby Bump- 35 Weeks

How far along: 35 weeks. His kidneys are fully developed now, and his liver can process some waste products.  Most of his basic physical development is now complete- he'll spend the next few weeks putting on weight!

How big is baby: About 5 1/4 pounds and almost 18 inches long.  Honeydew melon!

Sleep: It's okay.  It is getting a tad more uncomfortable and sometimes he kicks me so hard that he wakes me up.  I hope he is not a violent newborn!
Diet/Cravings/Aversions: Nothing new!

Exercise: YOGA! I am still teaching and I am still practicing.  I love being in the heat with all those other sweaty people!  I have 13 more yoga classes to take until I meet my goal, and I think I can probably exceed that number.  I am going to continue to go until I can no longer see those toes!

Gender: BOY!!

Movement:  Yes.

Worries: Ryan went to his friends house up north this weekend and stayed the night, leaving me home alone.  I couldn't sleep all night because I convinced myself the one night Ryan was gone, I would go into early labor.  I didn't.

What I'm loving: That the election is today and I will no longer receive phone calls, watch commercials, or feel my blood boil when I read ridiculous postings on FaceBook!
Symptoms: I am feeling pretty good this week and getting more and more exciting about meeting our new man.  My mom bought me a new diaper bag just because, it is so cute and I can't wait to look like such a hip mom wearing it!

What I'm looking forward to: Finishing up the nursery.  It is painted, the crib is in, I bought a breathable bumper, and washed all the clothes.  We just need to hang a few things and organize a bookshelf.  Then of course we need a sweet baby boy to enjoy the room!

Best moment of the week:  I am trying to find a newborn photographer in the area, and I keep perusing sweet newborn pictures... they are so squishy and cute!  AND ONLY 34 DAYS LEFT!!!  (hopefully)

Baby Bump- 34 Weeks!

How far along: 34 weeks. His skin is smoother than ever.  His central nervous system is maturing and his lungs are continuing to mature as well!

How big is baby: About 4 3/4 pounds and almost 18 inches long.  Like an average cantaloupe!

Sleep: It is okay, some nights are better than others!  Switching sides is sort of a production, and I have to fully awake to make the switch.
Diet/Cravings/Aversions: Yogurt, apples and Halloween candy!

Exercise: YOGA! I love the yoga barre class.  Today I was late and everyone thought I had had the baby.  So funny!

Gender: BOY!!

Movement:  Yes.  They are getting firmer and more powerful!

Worries: I don't know if I had any new worries this week.  I am still wondering what position this baby is, even though we have 6 weeks to move.

What I'm loving: Fall break! It is so nice to sleep in a bit (today the entire family slept until 8:15 AM) and have time as a family.  Today Ryan and I went to lunch ALONE and it was perfect.  I also took him to Ikea... it was a special day!

Symptoms: I don't want to hear from strangers how hard 2 kids is.  This is similar to when people say "enjoy your sleep" when you are pregnant with your first child.  There is no reason for these sorts of comments.  Most people have siblings and many people have done this.  I have no delusions that this won't be hard, but I am also confident that we will be fine.  Tired but fine.

What I'm looking forward to: Ryan finished painting the nursery and now we are working hard to get it all pulled together!  Our colors are gray, orange, and blue!  I can't believe there will be a little baby sleeping in there in less than 6 weeks (hopefully)!!!

Best moment of the week: Paul moved into his big boy bed!  Tonight is the first night, so I will have to report back and let you know how it goes.  He looks so cute in that big bed, and he was pretty excited to show his stuffed monkey his Lightening McQueen sheets.  He hasn't gotten out yet and I hope he doesn't wake up at 5 am.  The clock that changes colors when it is time to wake up is on the way.  I wish we had a video monitor to spy on him!

Baby Bump- 33 Weeks!

Not the best picture of the bump, but look at my cute San Fran scarf!

How far along: 33 weeks. He's rapidly losing that wrinkled, alien look and his skeleton is hardening!

How big is baby: A little over 4 pounds, similar to a pineapple!

Sleep: It is getting more difficult.  It seems like a production to switch sides in the middle of the night!

Diet/Cravings/Aversions: Peanut Butter M&M's.  But can we really blame pregnancy for this one?  They are just so good!

Exercise: YOGA!  I will admit, it is getting a tad more difficult to maneuver with a big belly in my way.  When I came home from a class last week, Ryan asked me. "What exactly do you look like doing yoga at 8 months pregnant?"  I am sure I am a sight for some!  I am trying to get in 25 more classes before the babe comes!  I think I can do this!

Gender: BOY!!

Movement:  Yes. Whenever the thought passes my mind, "Oh have a felt the baby recently?" He rewards me by punching me hard.  It is nice we are so in sync.

Worries: Still don't know what I want to name the baby.  I am nervous that this baby won't take a bottle.  I have heard some stories recently about the 2nd child refusing the bottle.  This sounds pretty annoying.  I am also worried about pumping at work.  When am I going to do that?  Where am I going to do that?  What if some teenager walks in on me and sees the SHOCK of their lives??

What I'm loving: Fall days, scarves, Paul using the phrase "I sure do."  Except it is not always used in the correct manner.  For example: "Paul, we don't kick mommy when she so nicely tries to put your shoes on in the morning."  Paul: I SURE DO.

Symptoms: Not sleeping and feeling more pregnant! And I am feeling more tired.

What I'm looking forward to: FALL BREAK!  NO work at the job, but lots of work on the nursery and Paul's big boy room!!

Best moment of the week: Knowing that there are less than 50 days and baby boy #2 will be here!  I am getting excited!

32 Weeks- Baby Bump!!

Really bumpin now!!

How far along: 32 weeks.  He now has toenails, fingernails, and real hair!! His skin is becoming soft and smooth and he is plumping up in preparation for birth!

How big is baby: 3.75 pounds, 16.7 inches long (such specific numbers), similar to a large jicama

Sleep: I cannot believe how much this baby moves at night.  He has kept me up several nights this week, punching and kicking me.  I am trying to show him who is boss.  I am losing.

Diet/Cravings/Aversions: Honeycrisp apples, yogurt, pretzels filled with peanut butter!

Exercise: YOGA!  Just got my maternity leave lined up for my yoga teaching, and of course I am trying to teach up to the bitter last day.  It is better than waiting around at home for this baby to come! I also went to this barre class, my yoga studio's version of barre method.  I was a sight to see with an eight month prego belly, but I loved it.  How can little movements hurt so much??

Gender: BOY!!

Movement:  Yes.

Worries: What are we naming this child??  Why are boy names so difficult?

What I'm loving: Saturday it was cold and rainy, and Paul and I were on the couch much of the day watching Ice Age and reading books.  It was a great lazy day.  Sunday the weather turned and I got to take a little walk and get coffee with my girlfriends!

Symptoms: Not sleeping and feeling more pregnant! And I am back to easy annoyance (was I ever off this)?

What I'm looking forward to: Doctor's appointment for a little check up on the little dude!

Best moment of the week: Paul told us that he is going to help put the baby to bed and help change his diaper.  This is the MOST he has spoken of his baby brother EVER.

Reading Baby Books While Pregnant.

When I was pregnant with Paul, I read a TON of baby books.  What to Expect, Girlfriends Guide, Natural Childbirth, Babywise, Happiest Baby on the Block, etc. etc. etc.  I felt armed with knowledge.  Then the baby came and all that I read and researched was thrown directly out the window because I was simply trying to survive.  Which is obviously difficult with no sleep and a tiny person attached to your breast.

So this time I got a little smarter and decided to forgo the baby books because what is more informational than actual experience?  Sure, I like to glance at What to Expect once in awhile to see what crazy symptoms I could be experiencing, but overall I feel confident that the first 6 weeks are awful, and then we will come out of the fog and learn to function on little sleep and raging hormones.  Sound fun?

Although I have resisted reading traditional baby books, I have picked up the book Bringing Up Bebe.  I am sure this was a bad idea.

Bringing up Bebe is about an American women and her British husband who live in France and decide to raise their children there.  The author describes the differences between French children and American children.  For example, French children sleep through the night faster.  They eat better (no children's menus or constant pleading for macaroni and cheese or chicken nuggets).  French families take their children out to dinner and apparently it is a nice experience.  No one is running around or trying to weasel their way out of a high chair.  There is no yelling or screaming or throwing of food.  They eat off the regular menu.  And they are polite.

According to the author, French moms typically go back to work at three months and their children are in very affordable daycare.  They go to preschool, they go on overnight trips starting in first grade with their classes.  French parents take their kids to the park and can allegedly carry on adult conversations while their children play.  They do not have to stop mid sentence to redirect or chase someone who is trying to escape the playground.  This scenario sounds intriguing, sounds delightful, and sounds like a load of horseshit.

After I read this entire book, I still cannot figure out how you would parent in this fashion.  The author discussed some pause time.  When you hear your baby crying in the middle of the night, you should pause for a few minutes before going to get them to see if they can self-soothe and go back to sleep on their own.  Okay.  How long is a few minutes?  2?  17?  I need concrete facts.  I need a French mom to come live in my house while I have this new baby and hold me down on the bed while I give the newborn some pause time.

The author also indicated that French women have their children on a schedule almost immediately and that the entire country has their kids on the same schedule so when their son or daughter arrives at daycare, the routine is reinforced.  French parents are not "helicopter" parents.  They make sure their kids have time to play alone and get bored and then figure out what to do to entertain themselves.  Allegedly they expect their children to act a certain way, and for the most part these kids do.

You should not read this book if you have a two year old.  A two year old who is not the most relaxing person on a dinner date.  Who does throw food or try to run around a restaurant unless you bombard his brain with annoying games on your iphone.  You should not read this book if you are constantly redirecting your two-year old and even when you have play dates the adults can hardly finish a sentence, let alone a story without intervening in some toddler crisis.  This book will only make you feel bad and if you are pregnant in addition to raising a two year old, you will have odd fantasies of packing up the entire family, moving to France where someone has to SHOW you how to get your baby to sleep through the night while your eldest eats a variety of cheese and croissants.  You have been officially warned.  You should read this book before you have kids so you can continue to be idealistic and naive about how child rearing will go.  Otherwise, it has the strong possibility to make you feel bad.

Have you read this book?  What were your thoughts?
